Pioneering Solutions in Animal Waste Management
Managing animal waste is a pressing challenge on global scale. Improper disposal leads to significant environmental issues: air pollution (Methane, NOx), soil and water contamination (due to liquefied waste infiltrating underground water), unpleasant odors, the spread of pathogens, and the proliferation of insects.
Unlocking the Potential of Animal Waste as a Valuable Resource
The innovative solution to transform these environmental threats into positive outcomes is anaerobic digestion—a process that uses waste to produce biogas. The first industrial-scale biogas unit in the country has been constructed by Tavaan Azmayan Technical & Construction Co.
This state-of-the-art facility is designed to process 280 tons of cow manure daily, producing 12,000 m³ of biogas. The biogas fuels two Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units, generating electricity and heat. The plant exports 1,000 kW of power to the 20 kV grid while meeting its own energy (both heat and electricity) needs.
Advanced Waste Processing and Output Utilization
The manure undergoes biochemical digestion in two Continuous Stirred Tank Reactors (CSTRs) over a retention time of 25 days. The resulting digested slurry is then separated into solid and liquid components using advanced dewatering units.
- Liquid Fertilizer: Rich in microorganisms, the liquid enhances soil fertility and is used on neighboring farms.
- Solid Output: Containing 25% dry matter, it has multiple uses:
- Enrichment and packaging for agricultural use
- Compost production
- Drying for cattle bedding
- Direct use as a natural fertilizer
Future Development and Impact
The plant offers vast potential for further advancements, including supplying heat for industrial processes or residential use, cooling via absorption chillers, and CO₂ enrichment for greenhouses—all with minimal energy expenditure.
The invaluable technical expertise acquired by Tavaan Azmayan Technical & Construction Co. through engineering and construction of this facility can serve as foundation for establishing new similar plants with great contribution to generating green energy, reducing environmental pollution and fostering the creation new job opportunities.
